At present, Sibelius does not playback microtones automatically, but requires assistance from a plug-in which generates extra MIDI instructions. This proposal is that Sibelius should automatically handle whatever is needed to achieve microtonal playback directly from the notation. As an added extra, it should also allow the user to specify the tuning of the micro-tones.
Sib 7 introduced a very large music library. Terrific idea--poor design. Every single score has to--essentially--reload the engine. Have 20 channels assigned to score A? 24 channels assigned to score B? If you have A in the foreground, and click on B (even by mistake) you have to sit and wait while sounds are loaded. Very large sound libraries (e.g. Hauptwerk, VSL) load in a separate process. You launch that application ...more »
It would be very useful to be able to have a Preference pane to select always showing the Transport when Sibelius is launched. At present, Transport has to be selected for each score opened. This would be especially useful for young Sibelius users.
Mordents, turns, and other ornaments should play back natively without the need of a plug-in.
For vocal staves, Sibelius playback should synthesize the sung lyrics in parallel with other instruments playing normally. This would be of immense benefit to choral directors/composers, and in the production of choir rehearsal tracks.
I would hope that Sibelius could achieve a better quality than the "Virtual Singer" component of "Harmony Assistant".
Sibelius presently only permits two-channel audio playback (that is, stereo). This significantly limits high-end Sibelius users--composers, arrangers, producers, and performers targeting surround-sound (e.g. 5.1 or 7.1) audio systems, or larger speaker arrays. This is particularly significant with very large VST libraries where different portions of a library (e.g. strings, winds--or different ranks or divisions of ...more »
Currently arpeggios playback starting on the beat, but it would be nice to have the option of making them always play before the beat.
If music smoothly scrolled while playing in panorama view, this would allow people to play along with the score and also make for a much more natural aesthetic. Also, if there were an option to replace the playback line with simply lighting up the note heads as they played, this would also greatly improve the aesthetics of playback (not only in panorama view).
Although trills are adjustable via the inspector, it would be great to have a variety of trill lines (sharp, flat, natural, 1/2, etc.) that play back appropriately. It would also be great if pieces without key signature ("atonal") would default to semitone trills, rather than diatonic ones.
I know this is a big one, but a very careful and thorough adjustment of the dynamics that each instrument sounds at, at every given dynamic level, would be fantastic. In short balance all the instruments better, which would even mean re-recording some instruments (but not all). Some instruments are well balanced when playing slowly, but when speed increases their volume drops (clarinet for example). Some articulations ...more »
When you're playing a score with signs of repetition and have to stop to do some adjustment, to resume playback, Sibelius starts again as if for the first time. It would be important to be able to restart the playback also the second repetition, because then you can save time.
