In the most recent update accidentals entered into text take up more vertical space than letters or numbers. More specifically the complete area of the character, not the actual character itself is taller. Therefore when creating multiple lines of text any line that includes an accidental will have a larger vertical spacing than lines that have only letters or numbers. I frequently have to make changes to the default spacing between staves - either in a full score or in parts. Often, though, I will want to ensure that this manual spacing is consistent between multiple staves. It would be great if it were possible to select a group of staves, hit "Distribute Staves Evenly" and have the spacing average out between them.
When spacing on the system is tight, Sibelius note spacing rules are poor. For instance, in the attached example (shown immediately after Reset Note Spacing), accidentals and augmentation dots in the lower staff (where there is plenty of room for them) cause irregular spacing in the upper staff, where the extra spacing is not required. I want to be able to produce scores in tonic sol-fa notation (WITHOUT standard music notation). As far as I'm aware, there is currently no software available to do this, but I'm sure it could be done fairly easily. The difficulty of just trying to write it on, say, Microsoft Word, is that spacing quickly becomes a problem, and there are no good ways of writing the little hook (, or ' ) denoting octave, without using up ...more »
Sometimes I want to have positions locked so that the spacing does NOT change when lyrics are typed in. This of course means that lyrics will not always be under the right notes, but that is a convention used in many scores such as hymnals to save on page space. I often need to import music from the above two programmes. I have several annoyances with this... most of all the capo chords become all of a sudden ff forte for F and all sorts of rubbish so they are unusable. Please fix this so you can import music and the capo chords remain as they were originally. When a piano staff includes a cross-staff slur, the optimize staves function works incorrectly, creating a very wide gap between the staves.
Sometimes, a combination of system text and magnetic layout can cause the "optimize staff spacing" function to create large gaps in grand staves. Whilst this seems like an unlikely combination of events (and there is a workaround by switching off magnetic layout on the system text) it does happen often enough to be annoying and consistently enough to be considered a bug.
When text crosses a barline, it is useful to make ["erase"] a space in the barline for the text to cross. Up to Sib 7 I used whitespace tif's for this but with Sib 7 I changed my method to using the typgraphic controls in the inspector. Scores with many grace notes take huge amounts of time to correct by hand. Some grace notes collide with each other or with the parent notes, while other grace notes are ridiculously far away from other grace notes or their parent note.
When slurs are added to grace notes things get even more ridiculous, in some cases it is impossible to manually set the correct position of these slurs.
The first note on the staff is close to the key signature. When this note has an accidental, it appears as if that flat/sharp is almost part of the key signature. Perhaps have better spacing by default?
I would love instrument changes to be implemented properly. The process still needs refining so that key signatures for the new instrument is spaced properly with the preceding item, be it a barline, clef etc. At the moment the key signature is usually crushed in or overlapping other things requiring manual editing.
As I work on wind scores requiring doublers to change instrument I have to do this quite often.
